Color sets the mood, and provides the framework for all other decorating elements in a room. Want a cozy room? Stick with warm shades of gold and red. Contemporary décor usually calls for cooler-toned colors such as grey or purple. Here are a few tips:
Starting From Scratch
Select your rug first! Use the color palette in the rug to help you select from the thousands of choices available in paint, curtains and upholstery fabric. Use the predominant (field) color in the rug for your walls, and pull a secondary color from the rug for the main color in your upholstery.
Working With Existing Colors Or Fabrics
Choose a secondary color in your existing fabric, and make that the dominant color in your rug. Also, try to accentuate patterns, rather than match them, such as placing a floral sofa on a coordinating geometric rug pattern.
Play Well Together
Try to create a color flow from room to room. Each room should ease seamlessly into the next, so look around and pull the colors from one room into the next using the colors in the rug… 'mission accomplished!'
